Personalisation widget on career site to help candidates find the right job

My Role
Worked as an independent designer with the PM and engineering team.
Background
Phenom's Candidate Experience
Phenom aimed to bridge the gap between job seekers and relevant opportunities with a personalized recommendation widget.
As the UX designer, my role was to identify the core experience problems and redesign the widget to make job discovery intuitive while giving marketers full flexibility and control.
What was the problem?

Candidates often felt lost in generic job listings, while marketers struggled to provide relevant matches without developer support.
💡 There was a need for a solution that personalizes job listings based on behavior while allowing marketers to configure experiences easily.

Goal
User Goal
To attract new talent and encouraging them to explore job opportunities.
Business Goal
To increase overall clickthrough rate that leads to apply rate.
Research & Insights
To build a foundation for the redesign, I first explored how the existing APW (audience personalization widget) was being used and which categories drew the most attention.
I interviewed clients to understand their pain points and expectations, and studied recommendation patterns across industries such as e‑commerce, music, and food to identify proven models that could inform a more effective and intuitive solution.
What did I discover?

-
Unable to control the widget's appearance or behavior due to its dynamic nature.
-
Lacks visual flexibility and doesn't align with company branding.
-
Job cards contain insufficient details about positions and lack action buttons.
-
Need freedom to position the widget anywhere on the home page.
-
Too many jobs are displayed simultaneously, causing candidates to ignore them.
-
Insufficient details about each job on the cards.
-
No option to save jobs for later review. Candidates had to visit the job description page each time, and lost track of their browsing progress.

Challenges
🧱 Fragmented layout - Separate block for each job recommendation type.
❓ Questionaire dependency - Widget only shows job recomendations when the questions are answered.
👀 No progressive disclousre - Users were overwhelmed by multiple job types shown at once.
How did I solve the problem?

Inside out approach
At the heart of the widget is a single, well‑structured job card that fits into various layouts and can be displayed across different blocks as needed.

Reusable building blocks
By strengthening this core component first, we created a reusable, flexible building block that can easily adapt to multiple layout configurations and use cases.

New and improved experience

The redesigned experience adds clarity for candidates to make confident decisions and gives talent marketers the freedom to create more compelling outreach.
